Mount ISO images!

Posted by | Posted on 2:09 PM

Earlier I had problems in managing CDs & DVDs. Keeping them in safe place and preventing them from scratches was a tough task for me. Soon I came across softwares which can mount disk images(eg: .ISO files) on computer itself. Yes this is true! One such software is Virtual CloneDrive.

Virtual CloneDrive is a really useful tool and is easy to understand. It helps you to mount many types of images .ISO, .CCD, .DVD, .IMG, .UDF and .BIN files.

Just download the software, follow the installation process and mount as many images as you like.

But this trick has some cons. If you have too many .ISO files, your hard disk space might get used up quickly. To overcome this problem I bought an external portable hard disk(320GB). Now i don't have to worry about disk space and protecting CDs or DVDs!!!

Daemon Tools, Virtual CD-ROM, Alchol 52% etc. are some other alternatives to Virtual CloneDrive.

Hide Files Inside Images

Posted by | Posted on 4:25 PM

We all have heard of softwares to protect important file. Most of them are even very secure and have passwords. But my way of hiding files is different. I hide my important files inside images. Shocking! isn't it? But yes this is very much true. Let me share my trick with you. Just follow these simple steps and you are done! But before following these steps make sure you have 'Winzip' or any other compression tool installed.

  1. Create a folder in C drive and name it, lets say 'Dummy'. Its location must be C:\Dummy.
  2. Put all the files you want to hide inside this folder. Also put the image file in which you want to hide those files. Lets say I want to hide files 'A' and 'B' inside the image 'Image.png'.
  3. Select all the files you want to hide, right click and select 'Add to archive'.
  4. Give it a name. I gave 'HiddenFiles.rar'. You can give any name.
  5. Open 'Command Prompt'. If you dont know what command prompt is, then, type 'cmd' in 'Run' and press enter. A black colour window will open.
  6. Type'cd\' and press enter. Now type 'cd Dummy' and press enter.
  7. Type'copy /b Image.png + HiddenFiles.rar Secretimage.png' and press enter.
  8. When you will look at the 'Dummy' folder you will find an image named 'Secretimage.png'. you can give the image any name and extension.
You have now successfully hidden your files('A' and 'B' in this case) inside the image.
When you want to see those files again, just right click the image file(Secretimage.png in this case) and open it with your compression tool. Then extract them to any location of your choice. No one will ever suspect that your files are inside an image.

Remount Ejected USB device without Unplugging

Posted by | Posted on 5:00 PM

Think of the situation when you have safely removed(but not unplugged) the external storage device and you suddenly realise that you have skipped copying a file. I have faced this problem many times. I used to think that remounting a storage device is not possible without 'USB safely remove' software which is not free.
But soon I discovered a method to remount a safely removed external storage device without unplugging it.

Here are the steps you need to perform in order to remount your device:

  1. Right click on 'My Computer'. Go to 'Properties'. Open the 'Hardware' tab and click 'Device Manager'.
  2. On menu bar click on 'view' and select 'Devices by connection'.
  3. Look for an USB root hub of the USB device with a yellow colour exclamation mark. Right click on that USB device and select 'Disable'. Again Right click on it and this time select 'Enable'.

The drive letter has now returned to 'My Computer'. This trick is useful for those who do not have a easy access to their USB device (for e.g. if you have your device connected to the USB port at the back of your CPU)
